Body & Brain Atlanta Regional Director Brian Huff practicing Tai Chi outdoors
Body & Brain · Atlanta

Atlanta Magazine · March 2026

“Qigong is a mind-body wellness practice that focuses on holistic wellness — it’s about bringing your body, breath, and focus into alignment.”

— Body & Brain Atlanta’s Regional Director Brian Huff

Ancient Eastern practices like Qigong and Tai Chi are having a moment — and Body & Brain Atlanta Regional Director Brian Huff explains why. People of all ages are discovering these time-honored disciplines: from adults seeking joint care and better balance, to younger generations craving stillness in an overstimulated world.

What sets Qigong apart is its emphasis on the journey, not just the destination. Slow, intentional movement cultivates awareness and calm from within — not by escaping the noise of life, but by building the inner capacity to navigate it.

Small shifts. Profound change.

Each day in May, we’ll share one mindful action rooted in Qigong and Tai Chi wisdom. Here’s a glimpse of what’s inside.

01 Breathwork & Body Awareness
Body Scanning & 5-5-5 Breathing

Begin with a Qigong body scan to notice where you’re holding tension, then use the 5-5-5 breathing technique — inhale for 5, hold for 5, exhale for 5 — to clear stagnant energy and restore calm from the inside out.

02 Energy Activation
Body Tapping

Wake up your body’s energy pathways with rhythmic tapping along the arms, legs, and torso. This traditional Qigong practice stimulates circulation, shakes loose stiffness, and signals to your nervous system that it’s time to let go.

03 Mind & Spirit
Overcome Your Desires

In Body & Brain, there’s a philosophy known as Geumchok (금쯸): developing the awareness and discipline to watch and overcome our body’s habits and desires. This practice invites you to pause, observe, and consciously choose — rather than react.
