Baby It’s Cold Outside! Warm up for the New Year!01/08/2015

Have you ever wondered why every winter season colds and flu take hold and spread from person to person like wildfire? These outbreaks often coincide with weather changes, especially when the atmosphere turns cold and damp. While much effort is needed for overcoming these illnesses once they have taken hold, preventive measures may be the more powerful “medicine.” 

Traditional forms of medicine believe that the season’s cold and damp energy can enter and settle into the body, causing energy blockages that encourage the onset of symptoms. The neck is believed to be an especially vulnerable place where cold energy may enter the body. 
The good news is that the Dae-chu, or GV-14 energy point can be stimulated to release this trapped energy for self-healing. This important acupressure point is located below the base of the back of the neck at C-7, the large cervical bone that becomes prominent when you bend your neck forward. 

Before you venture outdoors this winter, cover your neck to keep warm, and try these 3 exercises each day to release any cold and damp energy from the body before it has a chance to settle in: 



Head Turning

1.Sit in half-lotus posture with your hands on your knees and relax.


2.Gently and slowly turn your head to the right until you notice a slight resistance. Return to center and repeat on the left. As you focus on releasing cold, blocked energy from your Dae-chu, gently repeat this motion up to 30 times.


Clasped Hands Forward Bend

1.Stay in half lotus position or change to lotus, or sit with your legs crossed to perform this exercise. Relax your arms down by your sides. Reach behind your back and join your hands, interlacing your fingers.


2.Keep the spine lengthened, yet supple as you begin to bend your upper body forward from the hips. Lift both arms behind your back, palms facing upward as you gently, smoothly bend. Return to starting position and repeat 3 times.



Head Lift

1.Lie on your back with your legs extended and feet together. Flex your toes toward your body. Form a triangle with your thumbs and index fingers touching and place your palms on your lower abdomen, triangle pointing down.


2.Slowly and gently lift your head slightly off the floor. Lower it back down without allowing it to touch the floor. Carefully continue lifting and lowering as you alternate turning your head from left to right. Repeat up to 20 times. Relax.


Do these 3 easy exercises a few minutes daily and remember to give yourself the advantage this season with plenty of TLC: Good food, regular exercise, adequate rest, pure water and of course, keep warm!

Then you begin to feel that chronic weakness, fatigues and an inability to use your body as you wish are just a natural part of life. In this workshop, an experienced trainer will guide you to carefully observe your body, thoughts and emotions while helping you sense and strengthen your lower core to develop a stronger connection with your body. You will gain a deeper understanding of your body's energy system and how Ki energy works as an intermediary between your mind and body.
