What does “yoga” mean to you? Does it mean a certain type of commitment? Does it mean exercising in a class with other people? Does it mean doing impossible things with your body? Well, these are all part of the truth of what yoga is. Yoga does involve commitment and discipline, and it involves people learning together through movement of the body. But it is the relaxation within the discipline, the space between each personal connection and the rest between each movement that makes it all meaningful. This is the natural rhythm of breathing. The Earth breathes, our bodies breathe and we all breathe together. Breathing is the cornerstone of yoga practice and it is the element that has the greatest power to change your life.
Over the decades that Dahn Yoga has been in existence, many people have been healed just from breathing. Some people could barely move their bodies when they started, but regained strength and vitality through breathing exercises. Others with relatively healthy bodies gained emotional breakthroughs by breathing. That’s why breathing is a part of everything we do. Whether you are taking our basic yoga classes, trying out our tai chi or joining in advanced meditation, you will experience the benefits of our breathing practice.
Our Jung Choong Breathing series of exercises takes you through different positions to deepen relaxation and expand breathing capacity. The final position #5 is similar to Savasana in Hatha Yoga, but differs in the placement of hands and legs and maintaining focus on the lower abdomen. Try this breathing exercise as a powerful end of a sequence or on its own. See for yourself the difference a breath can make.
