Founder: Ilchi Lee
Body and Brain Yoga began in 1980 when founder Ilchi Lee began teaching a single stroke victim in a park in Korea. Soon, many more people came to the park, seeking to learn about Lee’s healing techniques and philosophies. After five years of serving the local community in this way, he finally opened a studio space, which allowed him to work more intensively with students and to develop his personal development techniques further.
The practice he has created is based on the Tao principles and the holistic traditions of ancient Korea, called Sundo, which Lee has studied in depth his entire adult life. While staying true to the original principles and intentions of these practices, Lee has modernized and systematized them to make them more convenient and adaptable to modern life.
The popularity of the practice grew steadily in Korea after the opening of the first studio, and then it came to the United States in 1991 through the efforts of his students, who sought to bring healing to people all over the world. The corporation that would become the current Body & Brain Yoga was established in 1997. Since then, the business has become an international phenomenon, and Body & Brain Yoga is recognized around the world as a leading provider of health and wellness programs. In addition, he has founded various non-profit organizations to bring these methods to people from all walks of life, including Tao Fellowship, the International Brain Education Association (IBREA), and the Earth Citizens Organization (ECO).
Ilchi Lee’s mind-body practices are taught to individuals, groups, companies, schools, and non-profits worldwide. Currently, there are about 700 centers in 17 countries that teach Ilchi Lee’s holistic health practices. All of these centers focus on helping people achieve five essential goals: opening and cultivating one’s energy system; developing one’s full brain potential; understanding one’s true value as a whole person; living for the benefit of others, not just for oneself; and living life as a journey toward fulfillment and completion.
Ilchi Lee has spent more than thirty years helping people achieve these goals so that they can be their best selves and so that the world can become a better place. These methods work because they are based on timeless universal principles that empower people to develop themselves for the better. His dream, starting with that first student long ago in a park, was to help people live healthier, happier lives, and step by step that dream is becoming a reality for people all around the world.
