Summer is the season of sun, activity, and connecting with nature. Longer days and warmer weather encourage exploration, travel, and new experiences. At the same time, hot weather and excessive fire energy can take a toll on the body and mind. As temperatures climb, the body needs to work harder to regulate heat, stay hydrated, and balance energy throughout the day. This makes summer a good time to utilize simple self-care habits that support healthy energy circulation.
At Body & Brain, self-care begins with awareness of the body’s condition. Through breathing, mindful movement, hydration, rest, and energy practices, you can help your body stay strong and balanced during the warmer months.
Here are several ways to balance your energy in hot weather.
1. Begin the Day With Mindful Movement
Morning is one of the best times to utilize a movement practice to manage your energy, especially in the summer.
Before the heat (and busy-ness) of the day builds, gentle movement can awaken your body, improve circulation, and prepare you to stay grounded and mindful. Qigong, Tai Chi, body tapping, joint rotation, and meridian stretching are simple ways to help your body loosen up and feel more balanced and establish a standard of peace and clarity for your mind.
Morning practice does not have to be strenuous to be effective. Even five to ten minutes can help you feel more centered, energized, and ready to face the day.
2. Stay Hydrated Throughout the Day
Hydration is an important part of summer wellness.
In warm weather, the body naturally loses fluids through sweat, especially during outdoor activities and exercise. Drinking water regularly throughout the day helps support healthy circulation, body temperature, digestion, and overall energy.
Rather than waiting until you notice that you’re thirsty, a simple but helpful habit is to drink small amounts of water throughout the day. Keep a water bottle nearby and make a habit of taking a sip, even if you’re not particularly thirsty, especially in the morning, before and after movement, and after spending time outside.
It can also be helpful to include water-rich foods such as cucumber, watermelon, oranges, leafy greens, and other fruits and vegetables. These foods not only provide hydration, but also help the body feel lighter, cooler, and more nourished.
Hydration also connects to energy awareness. When the body is dry or overheated, it may feel tired, tense, or scattered. Supporting the body with water is one simple way to care for your energy from the inside out.
3. Use Breathing to Cool, Calm, and Ground Your Energy
Summer often brings more heat, activity, and stimulation. While this can be enjoyable, it can also make the body feel tired, scattered, or overheated. To stay balanced, it is helpful to regularly bring awareness back to the body.
Breathing is one of the simplest self-care tools you can use to support your body and energy. Taking a few moments to mindfully breathe can help the body return to a more comfortable rhythm. From a Body & Brain perspective, the breath is also a way to guide energy. When the breath becomes slower and more natural, the body can release unnecessary tension and energy can flow more smoothly.
A simple grounding practice can help:
In Korean energy practice, the lower abdomen is considered an important energy center for vitality, balance, and overall wellness. Bringing awareness to the lower abdomen while breathing can help gather energy and create a stronger connection between the body and mind.
As you breathe, keep your attention on the body. Notice the feeling of the breath moving in and out. Let your breath naturally become slower, deeper, and more comfortable. You can also place your hands on your lower abdomen to help bring your attention there.
This short practice can be useful in the afternoon, after an outdoor activity, or anytime you feel hot, busy, or low on energy. Even a few slow breaths can help you reset, reconnect with your body, and continue your day with more calmness, clarity, and balance.
4. Choose Energy-Based Movement That Matches the Season
Summer is an active season, but balanced activity is important. On very hot days, gentle movement may be a better choice than intense exercise, especially during the middle of the day.
Qigong, Tai Chi, or stretching can help maintain circulation, balance, and energy awareness without overworking the body. These practices are especially helpful because they combine movement with breathing and mindfulness. At Body & Brain, students are guided to practice at a level that feels safe, sustainable, and energizing.
Energy-based self-care means paying attention to how your body feels and choosing practices that help restore balance. Some days, your body may need active movement. Other days, it may need gentle breathing, stretching, meditation, and rest.
Instead of following the same routine every day, it can be helpful to pause and ask:
What does my body need today?
Do I need movement or rest?
Could I breathe more deeply?
These simple questions can guide better daily choices. Self-care is choosing the right practice for your body, your energy, and the season.
5. Take Short Rest Breaks
Rest is an important part of energy management.
During summer, short breaks can help the body recover energy throughout the day. A good rest break does not need to be long. It can be as simple as closing your eyes, taking a few slow breaths, stretching your shoulders, or stepping away from screens for a few minutes.
Rest works best when it is intentional. Instead of waiting until the body feels fully depleted, take small pauses before fatigue builds. This helps support focus, comfort, and steady energy.
6. Create a Simple Summer Routine
A summer self-care routine does not need to be complicated. You can begin with a few simple habits:
Drink water (not too cold) in the morning
Wake up your body with gentle movement before looking at your phone, if possible
Set a reminder to take short breathing or walking breaks every hour or two
Eat light, nourishing foods that reduce inflammation
Utilize movement and breathing when you start to feel fatigued (rather than reaching for something salty, sugary, or caffeinated)
Practice at least 20 minutes of Qigong or Tai Chi at least 3x per week
Consistent self-care habits can help your energy stay stable and strong through seasonal changes.
